I Can Read! #4: The Deer Runs Fast

The Lao language is phonetic; the spelling of a word tells how to pronounce it. But there's a complication: Two or three letters, each with their own sound, may create a new sound (or tone) when used together. Some children never get past that hurdle.

This book introduces one such combination category: The letter that normally sounds like "H" becomes silent, but changes the word's tone, if it appears before certain other letters. Much of this book helps students learn to correctly read these combinations.
