International Folktales

Long ago the bat had no wings, just a long tail and four legs. But it was a clever animal. The rat had wings – but it was foolish.

The two animals were friends, and one day the bat asked to borrow the rat's wings. The rat agreed, but the bat flew off, and never came back. Today the rat is an unhappy animal, waiting for his friend to bring him back his wings.

This is one of seven popular traditional stories collected here from Korea, Samoa, Nigeria, and other countries.
